Nobody celebrates being drawn for a southern California deer tag. Its a last resort in case you don’t get drawn for that certain out of state hunt, or maybe you don’t have the money to travel. Whatever the case, George draws it (southern California) every year. Some years like in 2020, he draws two tags. Here’s the thing, wise man Bob said something like “You need to learn the land”. George has learned the land. He lives nearby and has been hunting this zone for many years.
I hunted a half a day with George this season. George and his compadre, Jesus, spent the other half of the day harvesting their third buck of the season between themselves. I was just pulling off the freeway when I got George’s text message that said they just killed a buck………. You need to plan to spend all day in the field.
George is a legend. I’m hesitant to discuss the success that I know he has accomplished and in the most dismal conditions. 2020 was plagued by several fires, a drought and a pandemic. I talked to several experienced local hunters in the same area who lamented their disappointment. It was a tough season. George harvested two bucks this year. If I’m not mistaken, he harvested two bucks last year. What’s his secret?
Excited to replicate George’s success, I was out at the same spot the following weekend, by myself. Walking alone in the dark is a bit unnerving at times but it has its benefits. I walked from before sun up all the way to sundown, covering over 10 miles and around 4-5 thousand feet of elevation. I ran out of water, took one nap and saw one doe. I am no legend.
